Yoga as Life’s Lens: Reflections on Autobiography of a Yogi

minute read

Paramahansa Yogananda’s Autobiography of a Yogi is more than a spiritual memoir; it’s an invitation to see life through the lens of the soul. In his telling, the extraordinary becomes accessible, not as far-off miracles but as a way of living rooted in self-awareness, discipline, and love.

This book isn’t simply about yoga as we know it on the mat; it’s about yoga as a unifying principle that weaves together the physical, mental, and spiritual threads of life. In the same way our travels, relationships, and moments of solitude shape us (as we’ve explored in The Idea of Self-Love and The Honest Truth About Travel), Yogananda’s teachings invite us to step into life more consciously, moment by moment.

Key Messages and How They Speak to Everyday Life

Simplicity that astonishes

“Be as simple as you can be; you will be astonished to see how uncomplicated and happy your life can become.”
In a world that glorifies busyness, Yogananda’s words are a reminder that peace often lies in subtraction, not addition. The practice of noticing what truly matters, something we’ve explored in other blogs, it is in the quiet mornings or in letting go of routines that no longer serve us, where we find the path to these simple joys.

Presence over worry

“Live quietly in the moment and see the beauty of all before you. The future will take care of itself.”
This mirrors the stillness found in meditation and the calm of a slow, mindful journey. It’s the same truth that threads through our reflections present in many of our blogs, most notably the recent travel reflections, to notice that when we stop chasing the next destination, the beauty of now expands. This beauty can be true in even the most mundane of routines, like a repetitive daily commute or the weekly washing.

Freedom from desire’s grip

“The power of unfulfilled desires is the root of all man’s slavery.”
In our Relationships & Self Worth discussions, we’ve touched on how expectations can weigh down love and connection. Here, Yogananda calls us to examine every craving, not with shame, but with curiosity. Freedom is not the absence of want, but the ability to remain whole without its fulfilment.

Mind shapes reality

“The body is literally manufactured and sustained by mind.”
Our physical well-being is a reflection of our mental landscape. This is where yoga moves beyond posture, and it becomes the way we speak to ourselves, the way we hold tension, the way we breathe through challenge. How we choose to see the world is and always has been a choice we make every day.

Stillness as sanctuary

“Stillness is the altar of spirit.”
Stillness doesn’t have to be a mountain cave, it can be the three slow breaths before responding to an email, the way we sip our morning tea without a phone in hand, or the pause before we say yes to something we don’t truly want. In Mind Body + Yoga, we’ve investigated how stillness can be the most transformative practice of all.

Inner transformation over material gain

“You do not have to struggle to reach God, but you do have to struggle to tear away the self-created veil that hides Him from you.”
This is a reminder that the work is inward. Whether you believe in God, the Universe, or the quiet intelligence of life, the veil is made up of ego stories, fear, and distraction and the removal of these is a daily, loving act of dedication to yourself and your practices.

Resilience through failure

“The season of failure is the best time for sowing the seeds of success.”
We’ve talked before about travel mishaps, relationship missteps, and the endless detours of life. Yogananda frames these as fertile soil. Opportunities that allow us to see that when the surface plan crumbles, the deeper plan, often the truer one, can take root.

Integrating Yogic Principles into Everyday Life

These teachings can move beyond the page if we allow them to shape our days:

Principle

Daily Practice

Simplicity & Presence

Remove one unnecessary task from your day and use that time for something nourishing: reading, walking, or silence.

Awareness of Attachment

When desire arises, name it. Ask yourself if it comes from love or fear of lack.

Mindful Thought Habits

Choose a phrase to anchor you. When mind chatter starts, repeat it softly to yourself. It could be as simple as “I am here.”

Cultivate Stillness

Take three deep, conscious breaths before each meal. Notice the way your body feels before and after.

Reframe Setbacks as Seeds

Keep a “seed journal” to write lessons from challenges, however small.

Strip Away the Illusory Veil

Notice when you’re performing for approval—pause, and return to what feels authentic.

Anchor in Love

End your day recalling one moment of kindness or gratitude. Let it be the last thing your mind rests on.

Autobiography of a Yogi doesn’t tell us how to live in prescriptive steps; it offers glimpses of what life looks like when we live awake.

Much like our shared reflections here on Words & Contemplations, it reminds us that travel, relationships, and even the way we make our morning tea can be acts of yoga, a union between self and life.

Yoga, in Yogananda’s sense, isn’t just something we practice. It’s the way we see. And when we see through its lens, everything, success and failure, desire and stillness, the known and the uncertain, becomes part of the same great, unfolding whole.
