Hue Vietnam, The Perfume of a Lost Empire

May 30, 2025
minute read

Hue was once the imperial capital of Vietnam and the heart of the Nguyen Dynasty (1802–1945). It’s a city built on poetry, perfumed rivers, and stories of royalty and resistance. The Perfume River, named for the blossoms that once fell into it from orchards upstream, cuts through the city’s soul.

Suggested Time: 2–3 days
Best For: History, architecture, food, cultural depth

Things to Do in Hue:

  • Explore the vast Imperial City (Citadel), a UNESCO site

  • Visit the royal tombs (Khai Dinh, Tu Duc, Minh Mang)

  • Take a dragon boat ride on the Perfume River

  • Sample Hue’s distinct cuisine, including Bún bò Huế and delicate royal dishes

What to Wear: Light, breathable clothes; respectful attire for temple and tomb visits.

Be Mindful Of: The city’s sombre history — many tombs and sites bear witness to wartime loss and dynastic decline. Allow time to take it all in.

Conscious Travel Note: Choose locally guided historical walking tours. Visit smaller family-run restaurants serving traditional Hue cuisine.
