Daily practice has been a feature for me over the last 5 years. Over that time it has morphed (just like everything in the last 5 years), depending on what I need at the time and my intention for practice. It is my one non-negotiable, I will move heaven and earth to make sure I have time to sit, connect and be.
The benefits of this practice are innumerable, many of which are felt and difficult to put language to. Nonetheless, if you’re wondering what you might gain from having a spiritual practice as part of your life, I’ve listed 3 (out of many) benefits that I see.
1. Nervous system regulation
It’s now proven that somatic practices such as breathwork, movement, shaking, humming, chanting and meditation help regulate your nervous system.
When your nervous system is dysregulated, you’re more likely to feel stressed, anxious, flat or even frozen in response to daily stresses and overwhelm.
Taking time to regularly discharge stored stress in the body helps you stay in a state of regulation, where you have the capacity to deal with challenges without losing your centre.
2. Better relationships
To me, spiritual practice brings two key pillars; awareness and compassion.
Greater self awareness arises from carving out time to be with your thoughts and feelings, and journaling helps with processing whatever comes up. This gives you the ability to reflect on your habits, how you react to certain situations and what might be underlying those reactions.
Therefore, the next time someone close to you triggers a painful reaction, you might have more insight into what’s really going on. When you can communicate that, everything changes and your relationships benefit.
Compassion for yourself in the process of unpacking all this is key. And when we show ourselves more loving kindness, it becomes easier to show others the same.
More love + less fear = strong relationships
3. Me time
It’s my time to be alone, phone off, burning my favourite incense and in my own world. Everyone respects this time and they know to leave me be. It’s sacred time.
In a world that expects us to be contactable 24/7, this is a special treat for the introverted Scorpio in me.
